transportation options

this shot was taken from the window of a restaurant in Datong, a modern city of nearly 3 million people. But, hey, it works.this is also in Datong, but could be any large city we've been in.
Like, for instance, Beijing, which I am enjoying so much more than i anticipated. It is a very cosmopolitan and civilized city...lots of parks, tree-lined streets, flowers. AND, clearly-marked and well-respected bike lanes (Paul, this one's for you).  We even saw a gal wearing a "Critical Mass" t-shirt the other day. Of course, we also came upon a lady (and I do mean lady in the old-fashioned sense: complete with hat with brim and veil, gloves, and high heels) who had been knocked off her bike somehow and was sitting, dazed in the street in the middle of a big crowd. OUCH!
Here's an early morning view from our hostel room in a hutong (that's alley to you): bike-pooling to work.
Repairs needed? Your handy mobile fix-it shop is readily available.
