random snapshots

This is the oldest standing all wooden structure in the world, so they say. It is in an arid plain between WuTaiShan and Datong. It's a pagoday (duh!) and I forget who or what it commemorates. We climbed up in it and it was pretty creaky. All the coal dust in the air in that area can't be doing it any good. I am still pretty taken with that silhouette, I must say. And, speaking of coal dust: see that thing by Cal's foot? That's the cooking fuel of choice in most of the China that we've been in and it is coal. Nasty nasty stuff to breathe on a regular basis. It was pretty bad in Xian, but reached it's peak in WuTaiShan (sacred mountain notwithstanding). Beijing, and, indeed, most of China is fueled by coal, but here in the capital we are not so up-close-and-personal with it. And I am quite relieved by that.
